Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide is a form of sedation that is administered as a breathable gas. Upon inhaling the sedative, patients will begin feeling more calm and relaxed within minutes. The gas is provided through a small mask that is secured over their nose during the appointment. Nitrous oxide allows the patient to remain awake and communicate with the dentist or hygienist but relieves the patient of any stress or anxiety.

At the end of the appointment, the gas mask will be removed, and the patient will return to normal perception and function almost instantly. The gas does not present any lingering sedation effect, making it perfectly safe for the patient to drive home after the appointment has ended.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is a more moderate level of sedation that causes patients to feel sleepy during their appointment. Most patients will sleep through their treatment and wake up once it is over. Those who remain awake will feel calm and relaxed while being able to respond to their doctor.

An oral sedative is usually prescribed a day or two ahead of time by the dentist and should be taken at least an hour before the appointment. This gives the sedative time to take full effect before treatment begins. Because oral sedatives put patients into a sleepy condition, they must have someone drive them to and from their appointment.
